The earliest citation in English seems to be ''Phillida and Corydon'' by Nicholas Breton (1542 - 1626) who appears to have been trying to translate or at least emulate a poem by Propertius. In the original, the name ''Phyllis'' appears in the Latin accusative (''Phyllida'') and using this in translation is probably a misreading of the correct form of the name. As so often happens, a popular poem or song gave rise to a brief vogue for the name.
