Flaunches represent "flanks," that is, the sides of an under-robe which is seen through the openings of an open-sided surcote.

• Flaunches - "Flaunches (singular “flank”) are heraldic ordinaries, issuing from the corners of the chief, and proceeding in circular arcs to base... Flaunches always occur in pairs; there are no single flaunches. They were sometimes charged in period... Flaunches may therefore be charged in Society heraldry.

July 1980 - differing tinctures allowed:

While it is acceptable to charge flaunches, the flaunches here are not charged; the rainbow surmounts [overlaps] them. Surmounting flaunches is not allowed by many Laurel precedents.
