  • The Egyptian Renaissance: The Afterlife of Ancient Egypt in Early Modern Italy - Information about awareness of Eqyptian art, including hieroglyphics, in late period Italy. "In the prologue of De varietate fortunae, published in 1448 but conceived perhaps several decades earlier, the great Florentine humanist Poggio Bracciolini recalls a visit to the Capitoline Hill with his colleague Antonio Loschi... It was the latter days of the reign of Martin V, the Colonna pope who had returned the papacy to Rome in the autumn of 1420... Amongst the ruins, Poggio considers ... several obelisks "which were transported from Egypt with great effort and expense, as Pliny records" (p. 58). Notably, Poggio remarks that one of those obelisks was incised "with various figures of animals and birds that the ancient Egyptians used in the place of letters" (p. 58). "

August 2003 - Eye of Horus not compatible with heraldry[edit | edit source]

Jawar al-Ifriqi. Device. Or, in pale an increscent vert and an Eye of Horus sable all within a bordure vert. This submission must be returned for use of an eye of Horus, which is an artistic design incompatible with heraldry and thus unregisterable per RfS VII.2. To quote previous precedent: The Eye of Horus is an abstract symbol or combination of symbols whose meaning was not understood by Europeans in the SCA period. Unlike the Eye of Horus, the occasional word or letter found in medieval and Renaissance heraldry were part of the languages and symbolic iconography of Europe. Nor is this symbol a reasonable heraldic depiction of an eye; a heraldic eye is a solid charge where the Eye of Horus is depicted as a thin line. As such, this belongs to the category of artistic designs which are not compatible with heraldry. (LoAR August 2001) http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2003/08/03-08lar.html
