Another mention found in the writings of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, a Spanish historian and writer who lived from August 1478 – 1557. === | ===August 2010 - rhinoceros:===
"The rhinoceros is a period heraldic charge, found as the crest of William Wade, 1574 (Woodcock & Robinson, Heraldry in Historic Houses of Britain, p.163), and as the crest of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries, 1617 (Bromley & Child, Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London, pp.1-3). The emblazons on those grants were apparently based on the famous Dürer engraving of the rhinoceros, dated 1515; judging from the grants' blazons of those crests, the rhinoceros was statant by default. As fauna not native to Europe but used in period armory, per RfS VII.4 the use of rhinoceroses is not a step from period practice." [Zafirah of the White Waters, LoAR of August 2010]</span>

Sloth:[edit | edit source]
The use of sloth as a term for the animal is dated to 1613 in the OED [Oxford University, 1971, pg. 2871].
Another mention found in the writings of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, a Spanish historian and writer who lived from August 1478 – 1557. He wrote "La historia general y natural de las Indias". See image 46 (a very odd image). - http://books.google.com.au/books?id=gm-tuJNH9sMC&q=sloth#v=snippet&q=sloth&f=false
José de Acosta (1539-1600) arrived in America towards 1573, lived in Santo Domingo, Mexico and Peru, and in 1587 returned to Spain. His good relations with Philip II facilitated the publication of De Natura Novi Orbis in 1589. The following year his American studies appeared published as Natural and Moral history of the Indias (Acosta J. d., 1590/1792)
Exoticorum Libri Decem of Carolus Clusius (Charles l'Escluse), 1605. Image 389. A sloth
- “Another charming animal, who for his excessive delay in moving is called a sloth, has three claws on each hand: shakes his feet and hands at a pace of extreme laziness: with a manner and facial features of a monkey: giving loud cries, passing through trees and eating ants “(p. 279).

Sea-Lion:[edit | edit source]
Sea-lion sea-monster, with the foreparts of a lion and the tail of a fish; it is also sometimes blazoned a “morse”, especially for canting purposes. It’s found in the attributed arms of “King Palaeologus”, c.1282 [ANA2 493]; in true heraldry, in the arms of Imhof, 1605 [Siebmacher 206].

March 2009 - hedgehog proper:[edit | edit source]
#179Theodora von Igelheim. Reblazon of device. Vert, a hedgehog rampant argent maintaining a sword Or hilted sable and a foaming beer stein Or headed argent. "Blazoned when registered as Vert, a hedgehog rampant proper grasping in dexter forepaw a sword Or, hilted sable, and in sinister forepaw a foaming beer stein Or, headed argent//, a hedgehog //proper is brown with a white belly. This hedgehog is white with gray face and feet, all of which are considered argent." http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2009/03/09-03lar.html

August 2010 - rhinoceros:[edit | edit source]
"The rhinoceros is a period heraldic charge, found as the crest of William Wade, 1574 (Woodcock & Robinson, Heraldry in Historic Houses of Britain, p.163), and as the crest of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries, 1617 (Bromley & Child, Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London, pp.1-3). The emblazons on those grants were apparently based on the famous Dürer engraving of the rhinoceros, dated 1515; judging from the grants' blazons of those crests, the rhinoceros was statant by default. As fauna not native to Europe but used in period armory, per RfS VII.4 the use of rhinoceroses is not a step from period practice." [Zafirah of the White Waters, LoAR of August 2010] http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2010/08/10-08lar.html
Conflict:[edit | edit source]
March 2009 - hedgehog with vs without grapes:[edit | edit source]
"Arwen de Redvers. Badge for Esther bat Baruch. Argent, a brown hedgehog rampant proper its quills impaling grapes purpure and vert. This badge is returned for conflict with the badge of Mairghread of Ryvel, (Fieldless) An urchin sejant eject proper maintaining a harp argent stringed Or. There is a single CD for a fielded badge compared to a fieldless design. The grapes, being maintained charges, do not count for difference." but see the August 2015 precedent allowing difference for Maintained Charges http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2009/03/09-03lar.html
