Period Forms:[edit | edit source]
Norse:[edit | edit source]
Ary's Viking bynames article has:
- burlufótr, meaning clumsy-foot, -gait;
- bægifótr, meaning gimp, limp-leg;
- tréfótr, meaning tree-leg, peg-leg.
- This suggests that -fótr is a deuterotheme that refers to how a person walks.
Nordiskt runnamnslexikon has the protothemes Auð-, Hæil-, and Øy- which seem to have a meaning of luck or lucky. It is not known if they can be combined with -fótr to create a byname meaning "lucky footed".
Cleasby Vigfusson defines "fót-viss" as an Old Norse adjective meaning "sure-footed" and explains it as "a wrestling term" (https://archive.org/stream/bub_gb_RnEJAAAAQAAJ#page/n286). (For what it's worth, that appears to be the modern Icelandic equivalent to "sure-footed", as well. [@http:''www.ordabok.net/en/dictionary-english-icelandic/Sure].)

The byname form might be as simple as “inn fótvissi”
