Celtic has various meanings depending on context. The term is used to refer to a family of languages with ancient European origins that was encountered by the Romans as they expanded their empire northward.

The family includes Breton, British/Brittonic (not English), Brythonic, Cornish, Cumbric, Gaulish, Gaelic, Iberian, Irish, Manx, Pictic, Welsh...

This article will focus on very early period, i.e. Roman era, Celtic names. For most of SCA period, see article on Gaelic Names.
