The use of numbers to designate reigns in period:[edit | edit source]

[edit | edit source]

In the Hamburgisches Urkundbuch, there are two documents from 988 from Otto III which are dated as follows:

  • "Data XVII kalendas Aprilis. Anno dominicae incarnationis DCCCCLXXXVIII. Indictione I, anno autem tertii Ottonis regnantis quinto"
  • "Data XV. kalendas Aprilis, anno dominicae incarnationis DCCCCLXXXVIII. Indictione I. Anno autem tertii Ottonis regnantis V".
  • The last clause in each indicates that 988 is the 5th year of the reign of the third Otto (who would have been 8 years old).

The English translation of the 1392 apprenticeship indenture of Katherine Nougle in London gives the year as:
  • "the fifteenth year of the reign of King Richard II," - English translation
  • "Anno rengi Regio R[...] quintodecimo," - the hard-to-read Latin original.
