Glossary of Terms:[edit | edit source]
An heraldic monster is any creature used in heraldry that does not exist outside the imagination. Monsters may either be clearly invented, such as the griffin, or a confused interpretation of a genuine animal, such as the heraldic tyger.

2. Constructed Elements: Elements that follow a pattern for the formation of period charges are registerable. Some patterns that have been documented include:
- c. Constructed Monsters: There is a pattern of creating monsters by combining elements from different animals and monsters used in heraldry. Thus, a new monster that follows these patterns is registerable. Items which can be constructed using this rule are registerable, even if it recreates a named heraldic monster which is demonstrated to be a wholly post-period invention in real-world heraldry.
For example, there is a pattern of combining the top half of quadrupeds with a fish tail to make a creature, as in a heraldic sea-horse. This pattern can be used to create an unattested //sea-bear.

Definition:[edit | edit source]
(includes defaults, proper tinctures, blazoning)
December 2020 CL - On Oriental, Part 2[edit | edit source]
In the November 2020 Cover Letter we announced the first in a series of reblazons to remove the term Oriental. We continue this month.
- The single instance of an Oriental griffin is just a griffin. There were no distinguishing characteristics to this charge.

Conflict:[edit | edit source]
=October 2008 - dragon vs. griffin:[edit | edit source]
Wenthelen of Drakelow. Name and device. Gules, a dragon segreant between in chief a pair of drinking horns Or, a chief Or goutty de sang. This is clear of William Castille, Gules, a griffin segreant and a chief Or. Griffins and dragons were ruled to be substantially different on the July 2001 LoAR. The design is not suitable for purposes of RfS X.2 since there are three types of charge on the field (dragon, horn, chief). Using RfS X.4, it is clear with three CDs: one for the change of type of primary charge from griffin to dragon, one for the addition of the secondary horns, and one for the addition of the tertiary gouttes.
November 2003 - fish-tailed:[edit | edit source]
"As a general rule, there is a CD between a quadruped (or quadrupedal monster) and a fish-tailed demi-quadruped." November 2003 LoAR
October 2001 - griffin vs. hippogriff:[edit | edit source]
Alana Griffin. Device. Sable, a griffin segreant Or winged argent maintaining an acorn Or. ...This also conflicts with Nicolette de Coulours, Quarterly purpure and vert, a hippogriff segreant Or. ...While the hippogriff, a griffin with the hindquarters of a horse (rather than a lion), was found in the Renaissance poetry of Ludovico Ariosto, we could find no evidence that it was used in period heraldry. Therefore the difference between a hippogriff and a griffin must be determined on visual grounds.
- In a winged quadruped such as a griffin or a hippogriff, the hindquarters are roughly one-third to one-fourth the visual weight of the charge. There are more visual cues to identifiability in the forequarters than the hindquarters, since the tails of monsters are rarely drawn with the care devoted to their heads. We also note the following precedent:
- [A dragon vs. a unicorn-headed dragon with lion's forepaws] "The visual similarities of the dragon and [the other] monster (changes to head and forepaws only) are simply too great [for there to be a CVD]. (LoAR 1/91 p.24).
- If changing most of the forequarters of a winged quadruped, including the highly identifiable head, is insufficient for a CD, then changing the less identifiable hindquarters of a winged quadruped should also be insufficient for a CD. Thus, there is no difference for type of monster...

September 1997 - tincture of wings and phoenix flames:[edit | edit source]
Just as we will give a CD for changing the tincture of the wings on a winged monster, so do we give one for changing the tincture of the flames of a phoenix."
January 1995 - bird-wing vs bat-wing:[edit | edit source]
[a winged serpent vs a bat-winged tree python] The change to the type of wings is too slight to count for the necessary second. [i.e. there is not a significant difference between a bird-winged and a bat-winged creature.]
