Basic Information:[edit | edit source]

<Adair> is the name of a place in Scotland.

Black s.n. Adair indicates that the origin of the name is uncertain, but it's probably from <Edgar>, via <Ed3ear> and the like (there 3 is a yogh, sometimes represented in later typesetting by a <z>). The entry notes "It is a fact that Thomas Edzear or Odeir had a charter of the lands of Kildonan in the Rynes of Galloway from Robert I". (Black, George F. The Surnames of Scotland.)

Period Forms:

<Adair> is found as a byname in 1510: <Johne Adair> s.n. swer. Another <John Adair> is dated to 1647 s.n. recomendation. Both from the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) - @http://www.dsl.ac.uk/index.html
