Annulet, (fr. Anneau and Anelet, written sometimes in plural Anelettz or Anels:) a small ring, possibly derived from the links composing chain armour. It is of frequent occurrence as a charge, and generally more than one appear: the two annulets are often linked in fess, or embraced; or they may be conjunct. Three may in like manner be interlaced in triangle. When three rings are interlaced the expression gimbal rings is sometimes used, and when more, they form a chain, q.v.

The single annulet is likewise the difference, or mark of cadency, assigned to the fifth son. > Azure, three annulets argent, (of another branch or)–ANLETT. > > Sir Nicholas de VEPOUND de or a vj aneus de gules–Roll, temp. ED. II. > Sire Johan de CROMWELLE de goules a vj aneus de or–Ibid. > Monsire de BARTON de Fryton port d’ermin, sur fes gules trois anneletts d’or–Roll, temp. ED. III. > > Argent, two annulets linked together gules, between three crosses formy sable–THORNHAGH, Nottingham. > Argent, two annulets conjunct sable, within an orle of trefoils slipped vert–John ETON. > Ermine, three annulets interlaced in triangle gules–MANDERE. > > Gules, six annulets embraced or, two, two and two–BRACER. > Gules, six annulets interlaced palewise in pairs, and a chief or–CLENCH. > Argent, nine annulets in saltire interlaced[chain], five gules and four azure–HATCHET. > Ermine, three annulets, one within another, gules–FYTTON. Definition:[edit | edit source]

March 2009 Cover Letter - widget inside annulet:[edit | edit source]

"A widget within an annulet will continue to be considered a primary widget and a secondary annulet, or a primary annulet and secondary widget, when those charges are the only charges on the field. Which of the two charges is primary depends, as always, on the emblazon. When both are present in a design as part of a primary charge group, or where they would be expected to be a secondary charge, the widget and annulet will both be considered part of the same group." December 2012 Cover Letter - complex lines:[edit | edit source]

From Wreath: Complicated Orles and Annulets Annulets with complex lines will not be registered after the June 2013 decision meeting without evidence of period practice. http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2012/12/12-12cl.html

November 2011 Cover Letter - voided/interlaced:[edit | edit source]

From Wreath: Voided (and Interlaced) Charges This month we ruled that charges that are voided as part of their definition, such as mascles and annulets, may be used in all types of charge groups. This clarifies section VIII.3 of the Rules for Submissions, which requires that "Voiding and fimbriation may only be used with simple geometric charges placed in the center of the design." This rule was interpreted in February 2011 to mean that mullets of eight points voided and interlaced were too complex to be used as a charge not in the center of the design. More recent interpretations have included mullets of five and six points voided and interlaced in this ruling, preventing their use as non-primary charges. However, as mullets of five and six points voided and interlaced can be found in period armory and are simpler and more recognizable than a mullet of eight points voided and interlaced, we have declared their voiding and interlacing to be part of their definition of type, and so they may also be used as non-primary charges. We will continue to not use the terms pentagram or pentacle, due to their possible confusion over whether or not an annulet is involved. [[4]]

March 2010 LoAR - charge groups with annulets:[edit | edit source]

Elionora Brenan. Device. Per chevron azure and argent, two oak leaves Or and a mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet sable. This device is returned for using three types of charge in a single group. On the Cover Letter to the March 2009 LoAR, it was ruled that when a charge within an annulet is not alone on the field, they are considered part of the same group. Therefore, the primary charge group in this submission consists of three types of charge: leaf, mullet, and annulet. This is a violation of section VIII.1.a of the Rules for Submissions, which states that "three or more types of charges should not be used in the same group." [[5]]

March 2009 Cover Letter - widget within annulet not SFPP:[edit | edit source]

Heralds should note that using a widget within an annulet is not a step from period practice. Multiple instances of items within a single or multiple concentric annulets appear in _Stemmario Trivulziano_ (plates 178, 194, 225, and 352), Siebmacher (plates 63, 152, and 156), Humphrey-Smith's _Anglo-Norman Armory Two_ (page 335), and other heraldic references. September 2001 LoAR - annulet with Bowen knot:[edit | edit source]

[a Bowen knot crosswise braced with an annulet] This could equally well be blazoned, absent some rather unimportant internal detail lines, as a Bowen knot crosswise surmounted by an annulet. The annulet does not hamper the identifiability of the Bowen knot or vice versa. This comes close to being the registration of a new knot, but falls on the acceptable side of that line. May 2004 LoAR - trefoil knot with annulet:[edit | edit source]

Fiachra mac Domhnaill. Name and device. Per bend azure, and gules semy of oak leaves, in sinister chief a trefoil knot interlaced with an annulet Or. Questions were raised in commentary about the identifiability of the motif a trefoil knot interlaced with an annulet//. We note the recent registrations of //a triquetra braced with an annulet// (Aoife inghean ui hEaluighthe, July 2002) and //a Bowen knot crosswise braced with an annulet (Fergus O'Fey, September 2001). This motif is very similar to those motifs, and is therefore also acceptable. The depiction of this motif in this submission was identifiable as such, so we are registering it. [[7]]
