The Pennsic Traceable Art Project (circa 2005-2007) assembled what was for a long time the largest freely-redistributable collection of heraldic line art intended for use in SCA armorial submissions. It has since been incorporated into, and superceded by, the Book of Traceable Heraldic Art.

Some of the images in the Pennsic Traceable Art Project have been found to be problematic or even unregisterable. These are noted below.

About the Pennsic Traceable Art Project

Introduction to the Third Edition

This project was begun as a response to the volume of heraldic art being sought every year at the consult table at Pennsic. Our heraldic artists were being worked overtime and then some, often on the same common charges.

The charges you'll find here are compiled mostly from their work. Many artists contributed, and this is not intended to replace any of them. But hopefully it will be a useful tool for those heralds unfortunate enough to not have a local heraldic artist or for consult tables where the submitters greatly outnumber the artists.

This is obviously not a comprehensive catalogue of charges, and it never will be. It is a reasonably large selection of many common charges, and it will continue to be updated with new charges (hopefully twice a year). And I look forward to any suggestions you have for how this project can be improved.

  • Dog - rottweiler (rampant) (From the 06/2008 LoAR:"There is sufficient evidence of mastiff-type dogs in the Rottweil region of Germany during our period that this depiction of a dog is registerable; however, the term Rottweiler for the breed of dog appears to be a significantly post-period development. Therefore the dog has been registered as a mastiff.")
