Names meaning old...

Period Forms:[edit | edit source]

Old Norse (courtesy of Christie Ward): Finnur Jónsson's Tilnavne i den Islandske Oldlitteratur (Copenhagen: H. H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri. 1908. @http://books.google.com/books?id=KWkSAAAAYAAJ) has examples of bynames meaning "old":

  • <(hinn) alli> "the old, the elderly"
  • <(hinn) ellri> "the elderly"
  • <forni> "old", or maybe "old-fashioned"
  • <Gamli-> prepended byname, "Old-"
  • <(hinn) gamli>) "the old" (extremely common)

There is a regular pattern in Old Norse of bynames being used either behind the name, or in a weak form as a prepended byname, so we have these possibilities:

  • <Alli->
  • <Ellri->
  • <Forni->
  • <Gamli->

So something like <Alli-Rekkr>, <Gamli-Snerrir>, <Ellri-Drengr> etc.
